Advantages of renewable energy: ecological transition perspectives
The advantages of renewable energy are increasingly evident in Europe. The sustainable energy sector is projecting investments of 60,000 million euros this year. This means that there will be a greater supply and lower costs in the production market. However, a question arises: What is the best option in this ecological transition scenario? With the following list of clean energies you can make an informed decision about the advantages of renewable energies:
- Wind energy: this type of energy accounted for 16% of European demand in 2020. The countries with the highest coverage are Denmark (48%), Germany and the United Kingdom (27%), and Spain (22%). In addition, Iberdrola points out that wind energy reached the second position in a decade (2007-2017) among the main sources of energy generation thanks to developments such as offshore wind farms
- Solar energy: the Spanish Photovoltaic Union emphasizes that the 16.7 GW installed in 2019 implies a growth of 104% compared to 8.2 GW in 2018. The countries with the greatest solar presence are Germany (4 GW), the Netherlands (2.5 GW), France (1 GW), Spain (4,201 MW), and Poland (800 MW).
- Biomass energy: this energy source accounts for 60% of the renewable energy used in the EU. In addition, it can structure a circular bio-economy with the sustainability of forest resources.
Trends in renewable energy
Among the most interesting energy projects today we find the following ones:
1. Green Hydrogen Plant in Glasgow
The ScottishPower company, a subsidiary of Iberdrola, plans the construction of a 20MW electrolyzer next to the largest onshore wind farm in the United Kingdom (Whitelee). The objective is to combine the advantages of renewable energy and a 40MV solar park supported by a storage battery (50MV) to produce 8 tons of green hydrogen per day.
The initiative consists of the assembly of 10MV wind turbines on semi-submersible concrete platforms. According to Iberdrola, a 500MV supply chain is envisaged in the Basque Country and the Canary Islands, Spain.
3. Salamanca wind farm (Spain)
The proposal involves strengthening the advantages of renewable energy with the installation of onshore wind turbines with an estimated capacity of 300MV. In addition, Roca (2021) ensures that the location of a nearby photovoltaic plant (191MV) optimizing the operation of the substation in Villarino.
4. Calar Alto energy island
The plan, promoted by the European Regional Development Fund, aims at a photovoltaic and biomass management model. This favors self-consumption and reduces pollution for the astronomical observatory located in Almer√≠a, Spain.
Looking ahead: the advantages of renewable energy
These are some of the benefits of using the different types of renewable energy:
- With multiple sources of generation, you can avoid the risk of shortages due to technical failures or adverse days (no sun or wind).
- Proper management of surpluses through specialized batteries. This contributes to the mitigation of climate impact and the saving on electricity bills.
- The creation of jobs. This is one of the central aspects of the advantages of renewable energy in the workplace. This year alone there are 2.800 jobs available in the ‚Äč‚Äčwind energy area in Spain.
- The increase in state income. Spain will receive 420 million euros in taxes.
- Energy independence. Investment in renewables strengthens the purification of resources and by-products such as CO2.
The advantages of renewable energy make up the axis of transition towards a sustainable production system. Today, solar, wind, and biomass energy have many characteristics. But there are no absolute paradigms. Change begins with modifying your lifestyle.
